Three kitchen or bath tiles from the Mettlach factory of Villeroy & Boch. Each has an atomic starburst design radiating from a central point, glazed in a mottled rust-brown on white. The tile is pressed in relief - each radiating droplet has a raised dot in a depression. Please click on the picture of the single tile, and then double click it to enlarge it to see the detail.
The tiles are marked on the back as shown with the Villeroy and Boch kiln mark, “Mettlach, Made in Germany, Saar”, and the production numbers 12 4...71. I was unable to find information on this particular mark and therefore whether these are period 1950s, Eames era pieces. They certainly have that retro aura, and would look great inset into the tile work in your mid-century home. Use as the central design element of a backsplash, or prop them up as stand alone pieces.
