Ann Kerr, in her Collector’s Encyclopedia of Russel Wright, describes how Wright searched for a company to make his next line of china following American Modern by Steubenville, looking for a more durable and higher quality product. “It was not by accident that he turned to the Iroquois Company for they had an established reputation for producing durable high fired china....In spite of its durability, it (Iroquois Casual) was advertised as a true china, a finer product than earthenware.” (P. 137)
This two quart casserole is indeed a lovely piece of china, gorgeously sculpted with lug handles built into the sides. The lid rises to a finely formed finial, and also is grooved on the ends to secure its place on the casserole rim. It most definitely has that Jetsons/space age look. It is glazed in “pink sherbet”, a color which was added to the line in 1951.
Size: 8-1/4" diameter by 5-1/2" high to tip of finial.
Condition: Excellent! This piece has lived up to the durability promise. No chips, cracks, fleabites, crazing, staining, or scratches. Normal wear on the base ring.
